Set in the heart of Sussex and surrounded by acres of rolling
countryside. Horsham was described is a recent survey as
one of the most affluent towns in England. It features a
subtle blend of the old with the new whilst managing to retain
the charm and atmosphere of the country market town it once
was. Records are unclear as to the derivation of the name,
but the most likely explanation is that the true signification
of Horsham is “Hors-ham”, or the horse-meadow.
The face of the town centre has changed to some extent
in recent years with the introduction of a traffic free,
enclosed shopping precinct, which has attracted branches
of many multi-national stores, but the core of the town,
the Carfax, remains almost unchanged. The Old Coach Inn,
The Kings Head, dates back to the 15th Century whilst the
famous tree lined Causeway abounds with magnificent specimens
of homes built as long ago as the 16th Century.
The town benefits from being most conveniently situated,
with main line rail links, (Horsham to Victoria/London Bridge
approx. 55 minutes) and is a short drive to the A23/A24/M23.M25,
whilst the International Airport at Gatwick is approximately
10 miles distant. South Coast Downs, such as Brighton and
Worthing are reached by car in approximately half an hour,
via the magnificent South Downs, as are the other major towns
such as Chichester, Guildford and Croydon.
Leisure wise, there is an abundance of cosy Sussex pubs
in the area, together with some excellent restaurants, whilst
golf (Mannings Heath and Cottesmore Golf and Country Club),
riding (Hicksted), polo (Cowdray Park), rugby, football,
fishing and numerous other activities are extremely well
catered for. Horsham park boasts a new recreation centre, “The
Pavilions”, with swimming pool and fitness complex,
and the Sports Centre at Broadbridge Heath where there are
illuminated football pitches with astro-turf and a floodlit
athletics stadium. Horsham has its own Arts Centre/Cinema
(currently being refurbished) which attracts national stars
of stage and screen. There are numerous schools in the area,
of highest standards, both state run and private.
Hurstland Park offers the peace and tranquillity of country
living, coupled with all the convenience of 21st Century
civilisation.
